Setting the Schaeffer Record Straight

By Rick Pearcey

A reviewer writes:

As an admirer of Francis Schaeffer, one of the saddest things I have witnessed during the last few years is the attempts by both his own son and by other detractors to impugn his integrity or, at least, to redefine him as something he was not. Reading son Frank Schaeffer’s memoir, both father and mother are portrayed negatively, Francis as a reclusive, depressed, sometimes suicidal man and Edith as a perfectionist nut. Well, perhaps the title says it all -- Crazy for God. This book by biographer Colin Duriez, Francis Schaeffer: An Authentic Life, should set the record straight.

Thanks for the link to this article. I will definitely pick up this book. I read "Crazy for God", knowing I would be getting a very biased perspective of life in the Schaeffer Family. But when I read Frank's descriptions of Francis and Edith's "faults", I took great comfort in the grains of truth in them. It is encouraging to see that people so greatly used by God still struggled with the reality of anger, control and even depression. My wife and I struggle with these things, as I assume many, if not most, Christians do. It is a Christianity that says, "Jesus just takes all those things away." that left me so discouaged in my Christian walk. To see that in the process of sanctification, I may struggle to the very end with some of these issues and Jesus is still Lord, gives me hope to press on. Real Truth that works in the real world is worth our effort and our lives.
